I Didn't Want That $450 Anyway

A few weeks ago our kitchen faucet stopped turning off at 45 degrees to the left.

Uh-oh, I thought, here comes a plumbing bill.

But I deluded myself.

"Maybe we can get used to not turning it off in the left position" I told myself.

Then the sprayer stopped turning off (e.g. we'd use it, but then it wouldn't switch back on it's own to the faucet).

So....last Friday we decided well that's it, we have to call the plumber.

Given that we want to remodel the whole kitchen in a couple of years, it feels like wasted money.

But that's a couple years we'd have to live with a faucet that doesn't turn off easily and a sprayer that will randomly spray you when you turn the faucet on (although that would be a fun little feature to surprise someone with).

Plumber came today to fix it and while he's here to also give us a quote on replumbing the upstairs bathroom and the powder room (they still have their original pipes, not a good thing).

So, just to fix the faucet?

$450 (I was originally quote $550, but found a coupon. Go me!).

That's actually less expensive than a new faucet/sprayer.

I am trying to find a way to feel better about this, but right now, I am just bummed that we are spending this money, only to remodel the whole thing in 2 years anyway.

The quote for replumbing those 2 bathrooms?

$7500.

I don't know what to say. I suspect that you needed a washer, which costs a few pennies. I think that a brand new replacement fixture would take less time to install, too. Could you learn how to fix a washer? It would take some tools and one afternoon, with a minimum of supervision. It is a useful skill when starting a real estate empire or renovation business. When they say "taken to the cleaners" I think they really ment plumbers.
